Craig Burk : Codes Of Abstract Conduct
Craig Burk is a composer/singer from New York. He released several cassettes before this mini LP on Jack Fetterman‚ Alia Records. Burk lived in Paris from 1986-1991 (39 rue de Lisbonne 75008). He eventually met the good people at Illusion Production in the West of France and released an LP ‚The History of Decency‚ in 1986. I assume his most reknowned work is Text for Solo Voice‚ (1999), a sprechstimme composition devised for his own baritone voice (I was unable to track down Robert Cummings‚ article ‚Craig Burk: Text For Solo Voice, Times You Can Tell, Codes of Abstract Conduct‚, from Computer Music Journal vol 23 #1, Spring 1999 ‚Äì if anyone can help). His voice on ‚Codes of Abstract Conduct‚ reminds that of David Garland, but the music here is more radical. Some songs have pure concrete music accompaniement, unpredictable electronics thanks Jack Fetterman, or even experimental guitar a la Derek Bailey played by Burk himself. Occasionaly the vocals goes their own way regardless of what the music sounds like, which makes these perfect songs a rather unusual experience.
